Week 13 - Pizza Box

Dear Spoon Full Farm Family,

Raise your hand if you love pizza. (Our hands here at the farm just went up)

In some ways, pizza is a simple food, but it's a powerful one: Pizza is nostalgic, communal, and convenient. Memories of childhood birthdays, late college nights, and slow mornings with cold pizza breakfast; at the center of many of these memories is pizza, a flat, round disk of deliciousness, over which jokes and secrets were told.

And it arrived so soon, so fresh, and so hot, after making one simple phone call! In tiny Williamstown, Massachusetts, where I went to school, my friends and I all had Tommy's personal number in our phones. After Colonial's Pizza officially closed at 2 AM, that was the number we would dial, and Tommy would stop whatever nocturnal activity he was doing and, faithfully, bring us a pizza.

Those were the days.

And yet these days, living on a farm too far from town for pizza delivery, and getting into bed before 10 PM each night, I find myself loving pizza more than ever. The reason for this is simple: I've learned to appreciate quality and process, more than just convenience. We savor the activities of rolling the dough, chopping onions and garlic, and smelling the basil, before putting our self-made pizza into the oven.

In short, we've come to appreciate empowerment (the ability to make our own food) as much as (if not more than) convenience. In being a CSA member, you, too, are showing that you appreciate empowerment. The produce we bring you must be prepared! It's our goal and our hope to help you strike a balance between empowerment and convenience, a balance that best brings you together in meaningful ways with loved ones.

So this week, we bring you amazing ingredients for making incredible pizza, with a message: you are powerful!
